Criticism on social media after it was revealed that the march was not non-partisan

The 'Justice for Robe - Freedom March', initiated by the Maha Sangha (Buddhist clergy) requesting the release of Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero, was initially presented to the public as a non-partisan event led by Buddhist monks, without any political objectives. However, as the march was scheduled to arrive in Colombo today (15), serious criticisms have emerged regarding its original nature due to the participation of certain individuals in the Kiribathgoda area.

According to social media reports, as this march, which proceeded towards Colombo despite heavy rain, reached Kiribathgoda, a group of opposition political representatives, including Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila and National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa, had joined it. Although this was presented as a march with a religious facade, evidence has now emerged that a clear political hand is operating behind it.

With the sudden arrival of these politicians, strong criticisms and displeasure against the march began to surface on social media. Many social media users accused politicians, who are facing ongoing lawsuits and various allegations, of attempting to implement their hidden political agendas under the guise of the robe. Severe criticisms were leveled, stating that the struggle, which began as non-partisan, had been hijacked by politicians, and that this was merely another step in a political operation to save the Rajapaksas.

Furthermore, social media criticisms further emphasized that the participation of such political figures in the march would completely deprive Ven. Gnanasara Thero of any opportunity to legally obtain a pardon or some form of clemency. As a march, which was said to have been initiated with the pure intention of protecting the Sasana (Buddhist dispensation), ultimately turned into a platform for politicians seeking political objectives and protection, the entire process is now facing severe public scrutiny.
