Reports are currently circulating about a special letter sent by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is currently receiving treatment in hospital, to his son, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who is in remand prison.

The full contents of this letter, drafted by one of his secretaries according to the former President's instructions, have not yet been revealed to the media. However, it is reported that the letter was handed over to Namal Rajapaksa when he came to Parliament through Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP D. V. Chanaka.

The main advice Mahinda Rajapaksa has given his son through this letter is to trust only the judiciary. In addition, the former President has also reiterated a warning he gave Namal Rajapaksa in 2010 when he entered politics. The letter indicates that he only allowed his son to enter politics if he was prepared to be imprisoned and suffer.

Sources further state that the former President, further explaining the nature of the political journey to his son, also recalled in the letter his own past experience of being imprisoned on a baseless charge during the early stages of his political career.
