The Early Childhood Development Authority emphasizes that conducting subject-based private tuition classes for preschool-aged children is illegal.
Mr. H.M. Wasantha Herath, Director of the Early Childhood Development Authority, revealed this while addressing a District Women's and Child Development Committee meeting held at the Monaragala District Secretariat. He pointed out that preschool children should not be subjected to distress through such tuition classes.
The Director also stated that permission will not be granted to start new preschools from now on. Under this, a preschool that was operating in the Sevanagala area has also been closed down. Meanwhile, he stated that a new curriculum has been introduced for preschool teachers through a five-day workshop, which also includes outdoor activities.
Concurrently, another risky situation faced by children was also discussed. It has been identified that children left alone at home, especially during the chena cultivation season, are at high risk. It was emphasized that the Women's and Child Development Committees should take responsibility for educating parents in this regard.
Also, it was further stated at the meeting that a special development plan for children of parents engaged in foreign employment has already been prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism.
