The Department of Prisons states that the number of inmates has decreased by about four thousand in the past few months alone, bringing some relief to the severe overcrowding that the country's prison system has been facing for a long time. The main reason for this is the faster process of issuing government analyst reports than usual.
A few months ago, the total number of inmates held in all prisons across the island was around forty-two thousand. However, with this new trend, the department points out that this number has now decreased to 38,000. Despite this reduction, the standard number of inmates that should be properly held within Sri Lanka's overall prison system is between 11,000 and 13,200.
Due to the existing excessive capacity and overcrowding, many problems have already arisen within prisons. In such a context, the avoidance of delays in analyst reports, which was a major factor severely impacting the legal process, has directly contributed to the reduction in the number of inmates.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the recruitment of new officers for the Government Analyst's Department has enabled the acceleration of the issuance of these reports. This administrative step has become an intervention that brings some relief to the current problem within the prison system.
