The second woman, who was seriously injured in the inhumane shooting incident that occurred yesterday (27) morning in the Halpatota area of Baddegama and was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Galle National Hospital, has also succumbed to her injuries today. She was D.N.G. Mallika, a resident of the Godahena Red Cross Housing Complex in Ambalangoda.
Two more people died at the scene yesterday due to this brutal attack. They were Lalith Susantha de Silva, the driver of the three-wheeler and a resident of Kuligoda, Ambalangoda, and the woman known by the alias 'Kalu Noni', who is the daughter of the deceased Mallika. This group had gone to the Galle District Crime Division located in Baddegama, signed documents, and were traveling back in a three-wheeler when they faced this tragedy.
Police investigations have revealed that this is a result of a conflict between two underworld gangs. The deceased 'Kalu Noni' has been identified as a person connected to the organized criminal known as Lanthuhandi Sujeewa Ruwan Kumara de Silva alias 'Loku Pati', who is the main suspect in the murder of 'Club Wasantha' in Athurugiriya in 2024. Loku Pati was brought back to the country from abroad on May 04.
Police have now confirmed that this murder was orchestrated by the disciples of Sobana Handi Jayalath de Silva alias 'Karandeniye Sudda', a powerful drug trafficker and underworld gang leader hiding abroad. A team of four individuals arrived in a car for the shooting, carrying two T-56 type firearms, and launched the attack using only one of them.
The manner in which the killers blocked the road, fired a volley of shots at the three-wheeler, and fled is clearly recorded on nearby CCTV cameras. Investigating officers have found that the criminals changed several cars multiple times during their escape route.
Police have now found a small red car with altered license plates, suspected to be connected to the incident, abandoned on a deserted road in the Wawulagala area of Baddegama.
