The former mayor of Bandarawela arrested due to a financial fraud

According to investigations into an alleged financial fraud and forgery incident at the Bandarawela Municipal Council, its former mayor, Mr. Janaka Nishantha Rathnayake, has been arrested by the Bandarawela Special Crime Investigation Unit. The arrest was made last night (09).

In connection with the incident, two revenue inspectors and several clerks of the Municipal Council were arrested and remanded several months ago. The former mayor has been arrested based on information revealed during the questioning of those suspects and other investigations.

Currently, officers from the Bandarawela Special Crime Investigation Unit are conducting further questioning of the arrested former mayor. He is scheduled to be produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate's Court today (10), and the relevant investigation unit is conducting further inquiries into the incident.
