Ranil's security attacked by Sirasa camera (Video)

A tense situation arose today (30) when former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who appeared before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court in connection with a case filed by the Criminal Investigation Department, was leaving the court premises.

Near the main gate of the court, a Sirasa TV cameraman hit a security officer of the former President on the head with his camera. The United National Party has revealed facts regarding this incident, stating that the attack was carried out by a cameraman attached to the Sirasa media network, and that the incident was well-recorded by the cameras of other journalists present at the scene. The security officer, who was injured in the attack, was hospitalized for treatment after lodging a complaint with the police.

Following this unexpected attack, a strong discussion has emerged regarding the security of the former President. Security forces are currently paying close attention to whether the security plans implemented during his arrival and departure from court were adequate. Furthermore, serious doubts have arisen as to whether this assault was a pre-planned act targeting the former President. A separate police investigation into the attack on the security officer is currently underway.

The case against Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Mr. Saman Ekanayake under the Public Property Act was filed based on the accusation of misusing over 16.6 million rupees of state funds for attending Mr. Wickremesinghe's wife's graduation ceremony in Britain in 2023. When the case was called today before Fort Magistrate Mr. Pasan Amarasena, the Criminal Investigation Department informed the court that the relevant investigations have been completed and the files have been forwarded to the Attorney General. Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the case to be recalled on November 11 to obtain the Attorney General's instructions.
