The Bombay High Court has ordered India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to re-investigate the death of Disha Salian, former manager of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The court reached this decision after considering a petition filed by her father, Satish Salian, who stated that the incident, which occurred six years ago, was not a suicide or an accident, but a murder committed after a gang rape.
In the first week of June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, 28-year-old Disha Salian had her father call the police to inquire if she was allowed to travel for a promotional event. She showed her parents the advance payment she received and left home, saying she would return in two days. However, her father was informed by the police that she had died on the night between June 8th and 9th. Her friends stated that she had fallen from the 12th floor of a building in Mumbai and that it was an accident due to alcohol consumption, but the police later concluded it was a suicide.
However, Justices Sarang V. Kotwal and Ranjitsingh Raja Bhonsle, who heard the petition, pointed out significant inconsistencies in the police investigations conducted in two phases over more than six years. The court questioned the absence of bloodstains at the site where the body fell, the injuries mentioned in the post-mortem report not being consistent with a fall from a height, and the delay in police documentation. Furthermore, the court severely criticized the investigation of this incident merely as a suspicious death from the outset, without registering a First Information Report (FIR) in the casebook.
According to a complaint filed by Satish Salian, the Central Bureau of Investigation has now registered a new FIR. Disha, who worked at KWAN Entertainment, had come to know about illegal activities including drug trafficking and child abuse involving a former minister and several others, and she had provided this information to Sushant Singh Rajput. Her father alleges that since they were preparing to reveal this information through a press conference, this planned crime was committed and evidence destroyed to protect powerful individuals in the relevant jurisdiction.
Less than a week after Disha's death, actor Sushant Singh Rajput was also found dead at his home, and the police concluded that his death was also a suicide. Sushant's girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, was arrested, but later CBI investigations revealed that she or her family had no connection to it, and the case was closed last year. However, Disha's father states that both these deaths are connected.
The court's decision states that the registration of this new FIR does not determine anyone as guilty, nor does it consider anyone a suspect until sufficient evidence is received. However, due to the involvement of prominent politicians, senior police officers, and Bollywood actors, this incident has once again become a major news story in India amidst political criticism and accusations.
