
The principal of Dambulla National School lost his life and two others traveling in the bus were injured in a severe road accident that occurred at midnight on the 18th in the Pelwehera area on the Dambulla - Habarana main road. The person who unfortunately passed away in this manner is Mr. Janaka Wijesinghe, a 38-year-old father of two, who served as the principal of Dambulla National School.
The accident was caused by a collision between a luxury bus and two motor cars.The luxury bus, which was traveling at high speed from Trincomalee towards Colombo, lost control and veered into the opposite lane of the road. At that moment, the bus collided head-on with the principal's car, which was traveling from Dambulla towards Habarana, throwing the principal's vehicle off the road. The bus did not stop there but continued further, crushing a luxury car parked in front of a tourist hotel, and then crashed into a nearby restaurant.
After the accident, Principal Janaka Wijesinghe was trapped in his severely damaged car for over 45 minutes, and local residents made a great effort to get him out. Although the seriously injured principal was admitted to Dambulla Base Hospital, Dambulla Headquarters Police Inspector Sugath Wijesinghe confirmed that he had already passed away by then. The bus driver has been arrested on suspicion regarding the incident.
Mr. Janaka Wijesinghe, who had been very actively involved at Dambulla National School for many years, was greatly loved and respected by the local residents due to the various programs he organized while maintaining close ties with temples and other schools in the area. The principal's car sustained severe damage in this accident, and Dambulla Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
