Immediately after the commemoration, the police removed Thileepan's statue.

The statue of Thileepan, a former chief armed member of the LTTE organization, which was erected without any legal permission in the Nallur area of Jaffna, was removed from the site by the police this morning (27).

A group of police officers who arrived without prior notice dismantled and took away this monument located on land belonging to the Nallur Municipal Council, and the final day of Thileepan's commemoration ended yesterday (26).

This statue was recently erected by a group commemorating Thileepan, who served as the Jaffna political wing leader of the LTTE, a terrorist organization banned in Sri Lanka, and later died. According to the work 'The Broken Palmyra', he was personally involved in the incident on July 02, 1987, in Urumpirai, Jaffna, where Tamil youths were killed and tied to electric poles.

Meanwhile, a tense situation arose between the police and the organizers during the 'Thyagam Thiyagi' Thileepan commemoration program held recently at the Nallur memorial grounds. Even though official permission had been obtained for the commemoration event, police officers arrived and seized all sound amplification equipment present, which led to this heated situation.

Although special police permission is required for the use of large loudspeakers, the organizers state that they only used small loudspeakers with very low volume to play commemorative songs. Therefore, the organizers and those who participated accuse the police of an illegal act by seizing even those small devices in such a context.
