A father and daughter have been arrested by the Western Province South Crimes Division in connection with the robbery of an institution issuing foreign air tickets and visas located in the Thalawathugoda area. Those arrested are a 47-year-old private security officer residing in the Kaduwela area and a 25-year-old garment factory worker residing in the Pahala Bomiriya Yakala area.
On the afternoon of the first day of last month, an armed group, brandishing machetes, broke into the said institution located on Pannipitiya Road, Thalangama, and stole six crore forty-nine lakh ninety-five thousand rupees. In addition, the robbers also took possession of a gold necklace weighing twenty-nine and a half pounds, valued at one crore twelve lakh fifty thousand rupees, and three gold rings worn by the owner of the institution.
During investigations based on information that a main suspect young man connected to this robbery was staying in the Kekirawa area, it was revealed that he had been arrested by Habarana Police on the 9th of last month with 'Ice' (crystal methamphetamine) drugs. The said young man, who was addicted to drugs, was later referred to a rehabilitation center in the Badulla area on a court order.
Subsequently, during further investigations, the police managed to uncover information about this young man's girlfriend, the 25-year-old garment factory worker. During extensive questioning of her, Rs. 518,000 from the stolen money and gold items worth Rs. 118,000 purchased with that money were recovered. Later, based on her statements, the suspect father was also taken into police custody at his home in Kaduwela.
