The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a comprehensive investigation in connection with the incident of finding 472 kg of 'ice' drug, valued at over 800 million rupees, hidden in a container at the Colombo Port. In this regard, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ranmal Kodithuwakku, who is in charge of the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Police Narcotics Bureau, was questioned by the CID for nearly three hours yesterday (29) and a statement was recorded.
On the 31st of last month, a team of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau first discovered a stock of 361 kg of 'ice' drug inside the said container, based on intelligence received by the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police. Based on the discovered stock related to this drug trafficking and information revealed from preliminary investigations, five suspects, including Pakistani nationals, were arrested by the Narcotics Bureau.
In accordance with an order issued by the Inspector General of Police, the Criminal Investigation Department is currently conducting a special investigation into this incident, and Mr. Ranmal Kodithuwakku appeared before the CID and provided his statement based on their notification. Furthermore, it is reported that the Criminal Investigation Department has requested the National Police Commission to transfer six officers, including Senior Deputy Inspector General Ranmal Kodithuwakku and Deputy Inspector General Ashoka Dharmasena, who is in charge of the Narcotics Bureau, concurrently with these investigation activities.
Police sources further state that the Police Narcotics Bureau had carried out several successful operations during the recent period under the direct supervision and instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ranmal Kodithuwakku. Through these operations, the Bureau was able to seize several large-scale drug consignments brought into the island and apprehend many leading drug traffickers.
