The Sri Lanka Police has decided to strictly implement the bus lane law, which is reserved for buses, from today (29) as a measure to reduce road congestion in Colombo and its suburbs. The police emphasize that continuous inspections will be carried out to find drivers who violate these regulations, and strict legal action will be taken against them.
The main objective of this program is to facilitate passengers to reach their destinations safely and without delay. Mr. S.M.U.P. Thilakarathne, Chairman of 'Metro Bus' company, points out that seven such priority lanes are operating centered in the Western Province. Concurrently, 104 luxury buses belonging to the 'Metro' service are scheduled to be added to operation from September 29, for the convenience of passengers arriving in Colombo.
Explaining the operational hours of these special lanes, Assistant Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala of the Police Traffic Control and Road Safety Division stated that this law will be enforced from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. During the specified period, no other vehicle will be allowed to travel or park in these lanes. However, in emergency situations, to prevent an accident, to avoid severe traffic congestion, or when it is necessary to turn a vehicle, other vehicles have been given special permission to use this lane.
Furthermore, the Assistant Superintendent of Police points out that these bus priority lanes are not reserved only for 'Metro' buses. Accordingly, any bus engaged in passenger transport can use these lanes.
