Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay (Thalapathy Vijay) has announced massive plans before the State Legislative Assembly to build a world-class Olympic city and a Formula 1 race-hosting motor sports city centered in Chennai.

In addition, a new integrated secretariat and legislative assembly complex, costing 1,200 crore rupees and spanning 20 lakh square feet, has also been proposed. This new administrative center, built to replace the historic but space-limited Fort St. George complex, is expected to meet the state's administrative needs for the next century.

Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay, who had earned a formidable name in the field as a renowned film actor, entered active politics in 2024 by forming the 'Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam' (TVK) party. Challenging the six-decade dominance of the two traditional parties, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), his party became the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. Subsequently, with the support of allied groups including the Congress party, Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026, joining the ranks of minority film stars who became Chief Ministers after M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa.

The proposed Olympic city, to be implemented by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority (SDAT), is planned to be built as an integrated complex comprising international-level stadiums, modern sports equipment, a high-performance training center, as well as sports science and sports medicine centers. The main objective of this center, which also includes accommodation facilities for athletes and coaches, is to provide formal training to Tamil Nadu athletes to win more medals in Olympic and international competitions. Although previous governments also put forward proposals for sports cities in the Semmancheri area, under the current administration, the Olympic city will be built as a comprehensive program covering all these aspects.

Additionally, the international-level motor sports city to be built will feature a state-of-the-art racetrack capable of hosting races from Formula 1 to Formula 4, along with training centers. Utilizing the strength of Tamil Nadu's existing two-wheeler and four-wheeler manufacturing industries and the established motor sports environment in areas like Coimbatore, the aim is to identify young drivers and produce national and international champions. This project is expected to significantly boost the state's economic growth by promoting tourism, attracting investments in the automotive manufacturing sector, and generating new employment opportunities.

Looking at India's motor sports history, the Indian Grand Prix was held at the Buddh International Circuit in Uttar Pradesh from 2011 to 2013, but it was later suspended due to tax disputes and high costs. However, with the aim of bringing Formula 1 races back to India by 2028, the Indian Ministry of Sports also established a special task force in June 2026. This motor sports city proposal announced by Tamil Nadu, strengthening that national initiative, will mark a new chapter in the state's sports and industrial sectors.
