Due to the driver of a cement-laden lorry, traveling from Trincomalee towards Matale, falling asleep, a road accident occurred yesterday (08) in Kantale town, causing severe damage to four vehicles, a building, and electricity and telephone line systems.

The moving cement lorry first collided with a gas-laden container truck parked on the road, and then veered off the road, hitting a high-tension electricity pole and a nearby building.

While the wires of the high-tension electricity pole, broken in the accident, were leaning towards the road, a freezer lorry carrying fish from Trincomalee attempted to pass underneath them. As the electricity wires got entangled in the lorry and were pulled, another electricity pole on the opposite side of the road collapsed, damaging a bus parked nearby and the telephone line system.

Following this incident, traffic on the main road was completely paralyzed, and the police intervened to divert vehicles via alternative routes. Kantale Traffic Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
