8 Moratuwa University students arrested for an assault incident

Eight second-year students connected to an incident where a first-year student was assaulted at the hostel premises of the Faculty of Technology, Diyagama, affiliated with the University of Moratuwa, have been arrested by the Kahathuduwa Police. This assault occurred after a heated exchange of words escalated, stemming from the first-year student being present near the hostel at night.

Those arrested are a group of 23-year-old students studying in the Mechanical Engineering Technology section of the said faculty. They are residents of Rakwana, Passara, Hikkaduwa, Minuwangoda, Ampara, Anuradhapura, Uduganwila, and Welipanna areas.

Second-year students had prohibited external students from entering a common area called "Zero Level" located between the first and second-year student hostels. Investigations revealed that the first-year student who was assaulted was present at that location around 11:15 PM, engaged in a phone call, when a group of senior students approached him, questioned him, and then assaulted him.

The student injured in the assault has been admitted to Homagama Base Hospital for treatment. One of the assaulting students also admitted himself to the same hospital the following day, claiming he was assaulted. Following a notification from the Homagama Base Hospital Police, the Kahathuduwa Police conducted further investigations and arrested these eight suspected students.
