A 33-year-old suspect, who allegedly assaulted a Member of Parliament from India's Hyderabad state and his father while they were on a tour in Sri Lanka, and then fled, has been arrested by the Weligama Headquarters Police. This suspect, a fisherman residing in the Mirissa area, was arrested on August 9, and the motorcycle used in the incident has also been taken into police custody.

Those who were assaulted include Ankin Narayana, a 30-year-old Member of Parliament from Hyderabad state, and his 62-year-old father, along with other family members. Having arrived in the country for a tour and staying at a hotel in the Weligama area, they had departed on the 7th of last month in a rented van to tour the Mirissa area.

During the journey, near the Weligama Pelena roundabout, a person on a motorcycle stopped the van, claiming the road was blocked, and got into an argument with the driver. At that moment, the MP, who was in the van, got down and attempted to speak with the motorcyclist, and amidst the heated situation that arose, the suspect assaulted the MP.

Seeing his son being assaulted, the MP's father got out of the van to save him, but the suspect also assaulted him and then fled on his motorcycle. Subsequently, based on a complaint made by the MP to the Weligama Headquarters Police regarding the incident, investigations were conducted, and the police took steps to arrest the relevant suspect.
