Police investigations have revealed that the person who committed suicide by placing his neck on a moving train near the Hettimulla sub-railway station in Beruwala was a main suspect in a murder case. The deceased has been identified as Sajith Dewapriya, a resident of Mukalana Road, Welle, Liniyawa, Matugama.
Beruwala Police found his head separated from his body due to him placing his neck on the moving train.Senior police officers were also searching to arrest the deceased in connection with the shooting death of a person allegedly linked to an organized crime gang at a birthday party held on July 23rd at a function hall in the Heddala area of Wattala.
Furthermore, a case is currently being heard against him in the Kalutara High Court regarding the hacking and killing of a person in the Meegahathenna area on August 27, 2018.
It has also been confirmed that he was convicted in four cases related to drug and illegal liquor trafficking and fined by the court. Accordingly, he was arrested for possession of heroin in 2025 and on March 1st of this year, and after being presented to the Matugama Magistrate's Court, he was fined ten thousand rupees on two occasions. Additionally, the court had imposed fines of nine thousand rupees and seven thousand rupees on him for two cases related to illicit liquor trafficking.
Beruwala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident under the instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for Western Province, Mr. Sanjeeva Medawatta, and Deputy Inspector General of Police for Kalutara District, Mrs. Padmini Weerasuriya.
