Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Mr. Siyapath Sasindu Wickramarathne has ordered the Anuradhapura Headquarters Police to refer the investigation notes related to the incident where a mother pushed her two minor children into the Malwathu Oya in Anuradhapura, which was overflowing due to the Ditwa cyclone, causing their deaths, to the Attorney General for further instructions.
The suspect mother, who had been remanded for over two months in connection with this heinous crime, was previously ordered to be released on cash and personal bail by the North Central Provincial High Court, after considering a bail application submitted to the Anuradhapura High Court through a lawyer. The two-child mother released on bail is Senani Thrimavithana, residing at No. 13/11, Railway Station Road, Angulana, Moratuwa.
Sub-Inspector Karunananda Wanninayake, the OIC of the Case Operations Unit of the Anuradhapura Headquarters Police, stated before the court that, at a time when the Malwathu Oya was overflowing due to heavy rains, the suspect pushed her son and daughter into the river in the early hours of the 2nd of last month. After causing the children to drown and die, she also attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Malwathu Oya.
The son and daughter who were thus murdered are Thisuka Meeriyagolla and Sithulya Meeriyagolla. The suspect mother has been produced before the court under charges of homicide, which fall under Section 296 of the Sri Lanka Penal Code.
The children's bodies, which were caught in the current and hidden in two locations in the Malwathu Oya, were found several days later, and post-mortem examinations were conducted at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital mortuary. Subsequently, by court order, the bodies were handed over to the children's grandfather and grandmother, who had arrived from Angulana, Moratuwa. They then took the children's bodies through a private funeral parlor to the Anuradhapura Nisala Nimnaya Public Cemetery and buried them.
