Short eats prices to increase due to rising flour prices - Bakery items up on Monday

With Prima and Serendib companies, the island's main wheat flour producers, taking steps to increase wheat flour prices, restaurant owners have also decided to increase the prices of flour-based food items.

Under this price revision, Prima company has increased the price of a kilogram of various flour types by an amount ranging from Rs. 15 to Rs. 20, while Serendib company has increased the price of a kilogram of all wheat flour by Rs. 20. In response to the increase in flour prices, the All Ceylon Restaurant Owners' Association has taken steps to increase the price of parata, roti, and short eats by Rs. 5, hoppers by Rs. 2, and string hoppers by Rs. 1.

Deputy Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, R. M. Jayawardena, stated that the reason for the average increase of about Rs. 17 in the price of a kilogram of wheat flour is the rise in freight and insurance costs due to the global wartime situation. Speaking to the media after participating in a well-repair program in the Monaragala area, the Deputy Minister said that the government, at the level of the President and relevant ministries, is making significant interventions to minimize the pressure on consumers.

Meanwhile, the Central Committee of the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association is scheduled to meet next Monday to decide on revising the prices of bakery products, including bread, in light of the increase in wheat flour prices. The association's president, N.K. Jayawardena, stated that a final decision on the future prices of bakery products will be made after the discussion held on that day.
