After the death of Europe's oldest King of Norway, the son is crowned.

With the passing of King Harald V, Europe's oldest monarch, who ruled Norway for 35 years, at the age of 89, his son, Haakon VIII, has ascended to the throne as king. King Harald, who had been on the throne since 1991, breathed his last at approximately 6:35 AM last Friday (August 28) at Oslo University Hospital while receiving treatment for a condition involving the destruction of red blood cells and a subsequent infection.

Upon learning of the King's demise, tens of thousands of people gathered in front of the Royal Palace and paid their respects by laying flowers and national flags.

According to the Constitution of Norway, upon the King's death, his son automatically ascended to power as King Haakon VIII, and he has chosen "All for Norway" as his motto. Addressing the nation via television on Saturday, the new King made a deeply emotional statement, recalling that his father was a very good father and that it was his parents' 58th wedding anniversary that day. King Haakon pledged to always be dedicated and attentive to the people, and is scheduled to take the constitutional oath before Parliament next Tuesday. Princess Ingrid Alexandra has been designated as the next in line to the throne in the new royal generation.
