According to the decision of the National Police Commission, Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has immediately transferred four Senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police.
Accordingly, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police W.K. Jayalath, who was in charge of the Southern Province, has been transferred as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for Sabaragamuwa Province, and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police U.P.A.D.K.P. Karunanayake, who was in charge of Special Security, has been appointed as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Northern Province. Furthermore, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police G.M.H.B. Siriwardhana, who was in charge of the Northern Province, has been transferred to the post of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Southern Province, and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Varuna Jayasundara, who is currently in charge of Women's Affairs, has been assigned the additional responsibility of acting Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for Training and Advanced Training.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to promote Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police. This promotion has been made in accordance with an order issued by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and the relevant decision was communicated to the National Police Commission on last May 13th.
According to that order, these promotions have been recommended to be effective from August 25th, and it has also been decided to repay all arrears of salary and allowances due to him during the period he was interdicted. Mr. Shani Abeysekera, who was arrested in July 2020 and remanded for 11 months, was later released on bail by the Court of Appeal.
Subsequently, in accordance with the provisions of Circular 3/2018, he was reinstated in service in 2024 and was then appointed as the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department.
