Prison officer arrested for involvement in a drug supply racket

A 53-year-old prison officer, accused of being involved in a drug trafficking ring supplying drugs to an inmate at Magazine Prison, has been arrested by the Mount Lavinia Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau. During this investigation, the police managed to recover 100 grams of 'Ice' (crystal methamphetamine) and 20 grams of heroin, valued at nearly 2 million rupees.

Information about this drug trafficking ring was revealed after a 32-year-old man was initially arrested in the Mount Lavinia area with the relevant drug consignment. During police interrogation, the suspect stated that an inmate at Magazine Prison had contacted him via WhatsApp and directed him to the location where the drug parcel was to be picked up.

Subsequently, the drug parcel was scheduled to be handed over to another person on Wanatha Road, Borella, and accordingly, police officers conducted a special raid at that location. There, the person who arrived to collect the drug parcel, dressed in a prison sports uniform, was arrested by the raiding officers, and it was later confirmed that he was an officer attached to the Magazine Prison.

This 53-year-old prison officer, a resident of Beliatta, Tangalle, had previously served at Welikada Prison and joined the staff of Magazine Prison last January. The other suspect arrested in connection with the incident is a 32-year-old resident of Vaidya Road, Dehiwala.

The Mount Lavinia Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau is conducting further investigations into the incident.
