Powerful cricketer Abishek Porel, who represents the Bengal state and Delhi Capitals IPL teams, has been arrested. This arrest was made based on several serious charges including giving false promises of marriage and engaging in sexual relations, rape, assault, unlawful confinement, threatening, and violating the Information Technology Act.

He was arrested by Mogra Police on the night of August 10, 2026, or in the early hours of August 11, at a house located in Emami City, which falls under the Dum Dum police jurisdiction in Kolkata.

Subsequently, after being presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Chinsurah, the court rejected his bail application and ordered him to be held in police custody for three days. This legal action is based on a complaint filed by a medical student from Karnataka state and her mother at the Mogra Police Station on June 23, 2026. According to the complaint, they had been in a romantic relationship for about three and a half years since January 2023, and marriage discussions had also taken place between both families. The complaint states that they engaged in sexual relations based on a promise of marriage, and later, due to disputes that arose about a year to a year and a half ago, Abishek Porel separated from her and refused to marry. Additionally, the victim woman has accused him of confining her in a house in Delhi on April 2, 2026, denying her food, and subjecting her to severe physical torture.

It is also alleged that private footage was recorded without her consent, and subsequently, there were threats to release these private photos on social media through other phone numbers and Instagram accounts. Accordingly, the police have registered a case under Sections 69, 311, 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. When these allegations surfaced in late June, Abishek Porel was in Bangalore and denied all the charges, stating they were baseless. However, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya of the Calcutta High Court, who heard the case, ordered the police to arrest the suspect and seize his electronic devices to protect the victim woman's privacy and dignity. Consequently, the suspect player was arrested after a special operation conducted under the direction of Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh.

Born on October 17, 2002, in Chandannagar, West Bengal, Abishek Porel is a left-handed wicket-keeper batsman. He has represented the Bengal team at the regional level and the India A team. In the 2023 IPL season, he joined the Delhi Capitals squad as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant. Subsequently, the management decided to retain him in the team for 4 crore Indian rupees. Throughout his IPL career, he has participated in 35 matches, scoring 769 runs with a strike rate of approximately 145. Porel performed successfully in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and in the 2026 IPL season, he played only 4 matches, scoring 108 runs. At the time of this arrest, he was not involved in any competitive cricket matches.
