The Attorney General has filed indictments before the Polonnaruwa High Court against four individuals, including former Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, in connection with the abduction and murder of Professor Subramaniam Raveendranath, former Vice-Chancellor of the Eastern University. The other individuals accused in this case are Kadirgamathamby Jeyakeeshan alias Jeyanthan, Nimal Devsukhan alias Jeyakanthan, and Nadarajah Nagulendran alias Simbu or Nagulan.
This inhumane incident, which caused great turmoil in the country's education and academic sectors, was reported between December 16 and 18, 2006. After a long period of investigations, the relevant indictments have been filed, and this murder, targeting Professor Raveendranath, who was a highly intelligent individual and a university administrator, at the time led to serious questions about the safety of the entire academic community.
By taking legal action against individuals who operated influentially within political and security sectors, a decisive step is marked towards transparently addressing serious crimes that were suppressed due to political reasons, and ending impunity. Legal experts point out that by bringing this criminal case, which has dragged on for many years, before the High Court for trial, the independence and transparency of the government and the judicial system are clearly reflected.
Civil society and the public expect that true justice will be served to the victimized parties through this trial, which will be held before the Polonnaruwa High Court in the future. Furthermore, this legal process sends a strong message to society that the law will be strictly and impartially enforced regarding such past crimes.
