The aged female giraffe that lived in the Dehiwala National Zoological Gardens premises passed away last night (18). The National Zoological Gardens Department confirms that the animal was nearly thirty years old at the time of its death.

Although the lifespan of a giraffe in a wild environment is generally limited to 20 to 25 years, in a zoo environment with proper care and conservation management, these animals have the ability to live longer. Accordingly, sources from the Zoological Gardens Department indicate that this female giraffe at the Dehiwala Zoo enjoyed a relatively very long lifespan.

No specific disease symptoms were reported from this animal in the period leading up to its death, and it has been observed that the death occurred due to natural physical reasons associated with old age. Further post-mortem examinations related to the incident are scheduled to be conducted today (19).
