Boralesgamuwa Police Constable accused of polygamy suspended from duty

A police constable attached to the Boralesgamuwa Police Station, who is accused of committing bigamy with another young woman while having a legal wife, has been interdicted from duty with effect from the 22nd of last month.

Police state that the officer concerned had his first marriage in February 2022 at the Bandarawela Marriage Registrar's Office. Subsequently, in 2024, he married another young woman for the second time at the Bokundara, Pinithi Marriage Registrar's Office.

Investigations have commenced based on a complaint lodged by the first wife, who married in Bandarawela, with the Mount Lavinia Divisional Special Crimes Investigation Unit. During these investigations, it was revealed that the suspect constable had also married another young woman in 2024.

The police constable, who was arrested based on information received, was ordered to be released on personal bail after being produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate's Court. Under the guidance of Mr. Samanth Wijesekera, Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Western South Division, and supervised by Mr. Ashoka Gunasekara, Senior Superintendent of Police for the Mount Lavinia Division, a team of officers from the Mount Lavinia Divisional Special Crimes Investigation Unit is conducting further investigations into this matter.
