Professor arrested for driving over a police officer's foot near the Temple of the Tooth procession.

A professor from Cambridge University in England has been arrested by the Traffic Division of the Kandy Headquarters Police in connection with an accident where a motor vehicle ran over a toe of a police sergeant who was assigned to special duties for the Kandy Sri Dalada Perahera. The accident occurred on the evening of the 22nd, and the police officer injured in the accident is currently admitted to the Kandy National Hospital and receiving treatment.

The officer injured in this incident is Sergeant Kumar, bearing number 61919, who is attached to the Pindeniya Police Station. He had reported to the Kandy Headquarters Police for special duties assigned for the Perahera. At the time of the accident, he was engaged in traffic control duties near the Padeniya bus stop on Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe Mawatha in Kandy.

Investigations have revealed that these injuries occurred because the motor vehicle, which was driving from the KCC car park towards the Kandy Clock Tower, ran over a toe of the sergeant's foot. The 63-year-old professor, a resident of the Kandy area, has been arrested on suspicion in connection with the accident, and the motor vehicle he was driving has also been taken into police custody. Officers from the Traffic Division of the Kandy Headquarters Police are making arrangements to take legal action against the arrested suspect professor.
