Taking a progressive step in the country's power sector, the Ministry of Power has taken steps to commence the integration of commercial-scale battery energy storage systems into the national power grid in early September. Power authorities confirm that the construction work of this project, which is based on 16 power transmission substations located across the island, has now reached its final stage.
These battery systems, essential for ensuring national energy stability, were brought to the island via the Port of Colombo on three occasions during May and June.Under this massive program, 85% of the project work undertaken by WindForce PLC near the Anuradhapura substation has already been completed. WindForce PLC and Galilee Bess, the companies responsible for the construction, state that the stored electricity will be successfully released to the national grid in early September. According to its operation, excess electricity generated by solar power systems during the day will be stored in these battery systems via the respective substations.
To meet the high electricity demand that arises at night, the stored energy will be released back into the national grid via the substations. This will prevent system instability and reduce reliance on expensive diesel power plants during the night. Each project has the capacity to add 10 megawatts of power to the national grid.
The control and management of these systems will be operated by NSO (National System Operator Ltd), which is under the Ministry of Power, while maintenance work has been assigned to the respective construction companies. The government plans to pass on the economic and financial benefits derived from this project, which provides clean energy without causing any environmental damage, to electricity consumers in the future. Furthermore, based on the success of this project, procurement activities for installing similar battery systems for an additional 23 substations have also commenced.
