A university student was fined Rs. 410,000 for hashish.

A second-year student of Wayamba University has been fined Rs. 410,000 for the offense of selling illegally imported foreign cigarettes and the drug known as hashish to his university friends. Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Mihil Chiranthana Satharasinghe imposed this penalty yesterday, after the suspect student pleaded guilty to these charges filed before his court.

The police had filed charges against this suspect student, a resident of the Balangoda area, under the violation of the Tobacco Tax Ordinance. Accordingly, facts were reported against him in court regarding the possession of 254 grams of hashish and 500 foreign cigarettes secretly imported into Sri Lanka, as well as their sale.

This illegal activity was first uncovered by a marshal who inspected the university dormitory. After he discovered the relevant stock of drugs and cigarettes, police investigations were launched based on a complaint made about it. These investigations were conducted under the leadership of Kuliyapitiya Headquarters Chief Police Inspector Kamal Ratnayake and Sub-Inspector Ekanayake, and the suspect was arrested. The police also informed the court that he had been carrying out this racket for a long time.
