A loyal petition when petitions are filed against 22

A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court in support of the 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill presented to Parliament by the government, aiming to increase the retirement age of judges.

This petition has been submitted by National People's Power Member of Parliament, Mr. Lakshman Nipunarachchi. He points out that the provisions included in the relevant bill do not cause any harm to public sovereignty or judicial independence, and therefore, there is no need to hold a referendum to pass it.

Already, more than 20 petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court against this constitutional amendment by several parties, including opposition political parties and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
