A complaint has been lodged with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption against former Minister Daya Gamage regarding a financial fraud exceeding 500 million rupees, alleged to have occurred within the Samurdhi Development Department. The Samurdhi Employees' Trade Union Alliance submitted this complaint yesterday (24), stating that the fraud was committed through illegal appointments made in 2019.
Speaking to the media after appearing before the Bribery Commission, Mr. Somasiri Liyanage, the president of the alliance, stated that millions of rupees in salaries had been paid to individuals illegally appointed to the relevant positions. He said this was a clear financial irregularity, and these details, which had been covered by the sands of time, were handed over to the Commission for investigation.
It was also alleged that the former minister had acted to provide subsidies based on political favoritism and to misuse the funds of the Samurdhi Department. Furthermore, the president reminded that Mr. Sajith Premadasa also served as a minister in the relevant cabinet during the period these incidents occurred.
