2 skull-less skeletons found in Chemmani mass grave - bodies rise to 539

The number of human remains identified from the Jaffna Chemmani mass grave has risen to 539, and during excavations carried out in the past two days, two skeletons without skulls were also found. It is reported that these skull-less bone fragments were among the 15 newly discovered skeletons at this site, which is considered the largest mass grave ever reported in Sri Lanka.

Under the direction of veteran archaeologist Professor Raj Somadeva and Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Sellaiya Pirunavan, 524 human remains have been recovered so far during these excavation activities. Two more skeletons have been found during investigations conducted beyond the previously demarcated boundary of the mass grave, raising suspicions that the extent of this site could be wider than initially estimated. Lawyer Ranitha Gnanaraja, representing the families of the victims, stated that among the remains identified during Tuesday's excavations were the bone fragments of five infants.

On the 100th day of excavations at the Chemmani Sittupatthi mass grave, the number of identified bodies had surpassed the 500 mark, and these new discoveries have occurred thereafter. According to the current situation, investigations and excavation activities at this mass grave site are continuing without interruption.
