The police state that during the fierce clash between two groups of inmates at Negombo Prison, the attackers used broken pieces of commodes installed in the toilets, as well as coconuts from the kitchen, as weapons to attack each other and to assault officers who tried to quell the riot.
As revealed by a senior police officer, both factions of inmates involved in these violent acts used various tools, including knives from the prison kitchen, scissors from the medical center, and broken parts of equipment from the gymnasium, for the attacks. Investigations have revealed that prison officers who went to inquire about the inmates' needs on the 7th were also brutally assaulted with these items. Police sources indicate that the attackers targeted the heads of the prison officers, and their primary objective was to kill the officers.
During special searches conducted inside the prison by crime scene investigation officers and CID teams, a stock of over a thousand clubs and blunt weapons suspected to have been used in the attacks was discovered. Many weapons found during these searches, including coconuts, scissors, and knives, have currently been taken into police custody, and arrangements are being made to present them as evidence in court in the future.
As a result of these fierce clashes that occurred inside the prison on the 5th and 6th, twenty-eight people, including a jailer and eight prison guards, have died. Furthermore, nearly a hundred people, including prison officers and inmates, have sustained serious injuries due to this series of violent incidents.
