To minimize the massive financial losses incurred by Mattala International Airport, investment proposals have already been called for, and all related activities are planned to be completed by the year 2027. During the progress review meeting of the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, held under the chairmanship of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, it was revealed that this airport incurs a large-scale loss of between 6 and 7 million rupees per day, amounting to nearly 4 billion rupees per year.
Several alternative measures prepared to overcome this situation were also presented to the President by the officials.During this special discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat, the current performance of institutions under the relevant ministry, as well as the 2027 budget proposals, were extensively reviewed. It was revealed that under the development plan implemented with the aim of enhancing service efficiency at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, the expansion of arrival and departure terminals, the construction of a new terminal, and the expansion of depots are scheduled to be completed within the year 2027. Furthermore, the President instructed that a joint review be conducted with the Sri Lanka Air Force to streamline civil passenger operations at domestic airports across the island, including Hingurakgoda, and to prepare a report expeditiously.
Work has already commenced on modernizing the passenger terminal and upgrading facilities at Jaffna Airport. Special attention was also paid during this meeting to the Colombo Port-related Logistic Park project, the extension of the breakwater in the South Port, the second phase of the West Terminal, and the digitalization of port services. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized to the officials that the financial strength of state institutions should be properly managed to provide maximum contribution to the national treasury without burdening public tax money. Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation, and Energy, Anura Karunathilaka, along with high-ranking officials from the ministry and heads of state institutions, participated in this event.
