A tragic story has been reported from the Gorakana area of Panadura, concerning the life of a 26-year-old woman who had completed her law degree and possessed a good knowledge of the country's law, ending tragically. This young woman, Mannamarakkalage Naduni Sahashri Kure, who had obtained her law degree from a private university and was described as beautiful, was found brutally murdered with her throat slit inside the rented room where she resided, drawing significant attention from across the entire country.
She was a permanent resident of Galkanuwa Road, Wadumaduwa Junction, Panadura North, and had previously resided in the Moratuwa area. Initial investigations revealed that she was employed in a high-ranking position at a private institution, had been married to someone, and was later divorced. Recently, a marriage proposal from an airline pilot was confirmed, and the two were engaged. However, due to an unwillingness to live together, they later decided to cancel the engagement. Sahashri, who was very fond of animals, faced strong opposition from her neighbors regarding keeping dogs at her home. After diligently searching for a rented room where she could keep her pets, she found this room in the Gorakana area and moved in.Later, she joined a hotel in the Panadura area and became acquainted with an assistant working there, starting a romantic relationship with him. He frequently visited her room. Meanwhile, she also developed a close relationship with a young man from Kekirawa who worked as the head chef at the same hotel. He was deeply in love with her, providing her with Rs. 35,000 per month for her expenses and room rent, and would spend the night there whenever he had the opportunity. The aforementioned boyfriend did not object to this love triangle, partly because Naduni was not officially married to him, and partly because the money she received from the chef allowed her to save her own funds. Naduni's mother was also aware of this situation, and whenever Denuwan (the chef) inquired about it, the mother stated that there was only a close friendship between the previous boyfriend and Naduni.
Previously, the hotel assistant's father had strongly opposed this relationship and threatened both of them. Consequently, Naduni filed a complaint with the Panadura North Police on June 5th. The matter was then referred to a conciliation board, where it was decided that since both were over 16 years old, they had the right to marry whomever they wished. Angered by his father's actions, the young hotel assistant moved into Naduni's room with his clothes bag. At that time, the five puppies born to Naduni's pet dog were also in the same room.
Last Friday and Saturday, Naduni's mother came to the room to look for her, but the door was closed, and there was no response to phone calls.
Seeing clothes scattered in the corridor, the mother assumed Naduni had gone on a trip. However, Denuwan, the second boyfriend, who was deeply worried about Naduni's disappearance, returned to the room with the mother last Sunday. There, they noticed a strong foul odor emanating from the room and saw flies covering the area. When they broke open the door and entered, they found Naduni's decomposed body on a mattress on the floor. Two knives, suspected to have been used in the murder, were found near where she died, and her five pet puppies were still inside the room. They immediately informed the 119 emergency hotline.
A police team, including Chief Police Inspector Tissa Sarathchandra, the OIC of Panadura North Police Division, went to the scene and commenced investigations. The clothes and mobile phone of the hotel assistant, who is the main suspect in the incident, were found left in the room. Police suspect that the young man murdered her and fled, and operations are underway to apprehend him. Meanwhile, the chef boyfriend also gave a statement to the police, claiming that Naduni had deceived him and defrauded him of nearly eight hundred thousand rupees (800,000) from his bank account.
Officers from the Panadura Divisional Crime Scene Investigation Unit and fingerprint officers are currently conducting further investigations, and a magisterial inquiry was scheduled to be conducted by the Panadura Magistrate. Under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Nishan Silva and Assistant Superintendent of Police Kamal Jayaratne of Panadura, further investigations are being carried out by the Crime Division OIC, Sub-Inspector Ashoka Namal, under the direction of Chief Police Inspector Tissa Sarathchandra, OIC of Panadura North Police.
