
The motorcyclist who transported the shooter in two incidents – shooting and seriously injuring a person near the Dehiwala Nisala Sewana Cemetery, and attempting to shoot another person in the Galle Road Temple Road area – has been arrested by the Western Province South Crimes Division. The arrested individual is a 25-year-old youth residing in the Attidiya, Yashorapura area.
On July 19th, two unknown gunmen who arrived on a Dio-type motorcycle shot and seriously injured Kuruppu Arachchige Sumith Rupasinghe near the Dehiwala Cemetery and fled. Two days later, on July 21st, the same group broke into a house on Galle Road Temple Road and attempted to shoot Don Munasinghe Arachchige Chaminda Ananda, assaulting him before fleeing, as revealed by investigations.
Acting on intelligence, a team of officers from the Western Province South Crimes Division conducted a raid in the Delkanda area and arrested this suspect along with 7200 milligrams of 'Ice' (methamphetamine) drug. During extensive questioning of the arrested suspect, it was revealed that these attacks were organized under the direction of Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Avishka Ain Dissanayake, also known as 'Kalubowila Avishka,' an organized criminal and large-scale drug trafficker hiding abroad.
The suspect had received two hundred thousand rupees for participating as the motorcyclist in these crimes, and 55,000 rupees and 3 mobile phones that remained from this amount have been taken into police custody. Further investigations are underway to apprehend the main shooter involved in the incident, the firearm used, and the motorcycle.
The suspect is to be produced before the court to obtain a detention order. Further investigations are being conducted by a team including Sub-Inspector Basnayake, the OIC of Unit 01, under the instructions of OIC Police Inspector Isuru Shamika, and under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police Janaka Kumara, Director of the Western Province South Crimes Division.
