The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has arrested former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda.
This arrest has been made based on the alteration of the relevant educational qualifications during the recruitment of Mr. Yoshitha Rajapaksa to the Navy and the arrangements made to send him for training at the Royal Naval Academy in Britain even before he officially joined the Navy.
Information regarding these irregularities was revealed during a comprehensive investigation conducted by the Bribery Commission concerning the process of enlisting Mr. Yoshitha Rajapaksa into naval service and subsequently sending him for foreign training courses.
According to investigation data, Mr. Yoshitha Rajapaksa was recruited for the relevant naval cadet course in December 2006. However, it has been revealed that even before that, in September 2006, the former Navy Commander had officially requested to send him for the said British naval training. Furthermore, investigations have confirmed that newspaper advertisements calling for applications for this cadet course, for which he was recruited, were published in October 2006.
