Gammampila's bribery complaint against the Speaker

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) party today (30) lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, requesting a formal investigation into the fraud and corruption charges leveled against Parliament Speaker Mr. Jagath Wickramasinghe.

This complaint was submitted by the party's General Secretary, Mr. Upul Gamage, and steps have been taken to hand over 10 written pieces of evidence related to the Speaker's corrupt activities to the commission.

Misuse of official residences, exceeding the allocated fuel quota, and using government property for personal needs are among the main allegations raised against the Speaker. Special attention has been drawn to the fact that he obtained additional fuel beyond the limit entitled to a Member of Parliament.

Mr. Gammanpila stated that evidence was presented here regarding the use of another house in addition to the official residence allocated, maintaining a private staff there, and taking furniture and equipment from the official residence to the private house.

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya emphasizes that although these corruption allegations were revealed by the Parliament's Chief of Staff, Mr. Chaminda Kularatne, several months ago, no formal action has been reported by the media regarding them so far.

Speaking to the media after submitting the complaint, Mr. Upul Gamage stated that the Director General of the Bribery Commission, Mr. Ranga Dissanayake, frequently declares the institution to be independent. He further added that the entire country would be able to witness the commission's independence based on how it acts on the evidence presented against the Speaker, who is the third citizen of the country, and that this is not a fight against the government but a responsible step taken against corruption.
