Six inmates accused of drug offenses at the New Magazine Prison in Colombo have engaged in a severe protest against the prison authorities' decision to transfer them to the Pallansena camp. During the protest, five inmates self-harmed by inflicting cut wounds with a sharp object, while the remaining inmate climbed a Bo tree within the prison premises to express his protest.

Authorities have taken steps to immediately admit the five inmates who self-harmed to the prison hospital. Internal prison sources report that the other inmate, who climbed the Bo tree in protest, remained on the tree until yesterday (19) evening.

The authorities have decided to transfer inmates to alternative prisons due to severe overcrowding. The New Magazine Prison, which normally has facilities for about 900 inmates, currently holds over 2800 people, and steps are being taken to periodically transfer inmates to Pallansena and Boossa prisons to manage this situation.
