Ms. Deepa Edirisinghe, who held a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) councilor position in the Colombo Municipal Council, has resigned from her post. This was officially confirmed yesterday (13) by Mr. Lasantha Alagiyawanna, the party's treasurer and a former minister, while speaking to the media.

This resignation has occurred in accordance with a special agreement she made with the party when she assumed the councilor position. Honoring the promise she made to step down from the post after a period of one year, she has thus taken steps to relinquish her position upon the completion of the stipulated period.

However, it is stated that even though Ms. Deepa Edirisinghe has resigned from the Municipal Council position, she will not withdraw from the political role she plays within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Accordingly, she is expected to continue actively serving as a member of the party's Central Committee and in an organizational capacity.

Further clarifying this, former Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated that this is not the first instance where local government representatives of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have resigned from their posts based on such agreements. He also pointed out that this internal program, which aims to provide political opportunities to other members of the party, is a normal practice.
