A 22-year-old police constable attached to the Gonapinuwala Police has been arrested by the Alubomulla Police in connection with an incident of releasing an obscene video clip, taken with his girlfriend, to social media through her Facebook account. This arrest was made on the 19th of last month, following a complaint lodged by the young woman residing in the Alubomulla area who was subjected to the incident.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that during a romantic relationship that lasted for about three years, a video clip taken when the two were together was sent by the suspect officer to one of her friends using the young woman's own Facebook account. Subsequently, when the young woman complained to the police about this, the enraged constable continuously threatened her over the phone that he would release the video to all social media if she did not withdraw the complaint. The complaint further states that he later released it to Facebook.
During interrogations conducted after summoning him to the police based on the received complaint, it was confirmed that due to this act by the suspect officer, the complainant young woman has been subjected to severe shame and fear, and that a sexual exposure has occurred. Accordingly, the suspect has been arrested under Sections 345 and 486 of the Sri Lanka Penal Code. Furthermore, since the relevant video was recorded on the young woman's own mobile phone with her consent, the police are also conducting a special investigation into whether she had any involvement in releasing this video to social media.
Further investigations are being carried out under the instructions of Alubomulla Police OIC, Police Inspector Sanjeewa Lakmal Wijeweera, and the suspect police constable is scheduled to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate's Court.
