A six-day official state funeral ceremony for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the second Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who was assassinated in a joint American and Israeli air strike on February 28, at the very beginning of the Iran War which started in 2026, will be held across Iran from July 4 to 9. This funeral, which had been delayed for several months due to ongoing intense war conflicts, marks a significant milestone in the current Middle Eastern political and religious landscape.

Millions are expected to attend this series of ceremonies, organized by Iranian authorities with the aim of demonstrating national unity, unbreakable strength, and a challenging stance to the world against the Western world.

In the attack targeting his official residence in Tehran on February 28, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was 86 years old, along with several family members including his daughter, nephews, niece, and granddaughter, also lost their lives. Subsequently, initial plans for the funeral in March were postponed due to the war. Accordingly, on July 4 and 5, his body was laid in state for public veneration at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla Mosque in Tehran. A large crowd dressed in black gathered there, and in the coming days, the funeral procession is scheduled to travel to the holy city of Qom, and then to Shia religious sites in Iraq such as Najaf and Karbala. All arrangements have been made for the final burial to take place on July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in his hometown of Mashhad.

Although foreign delegations from nearly thirty countries, including representatives from Russia, Pakistan, and the Taliban, participated in this series of funeral ceremonies, no Western nations were observed. Foreign media reported that large images of Khamenei were displayed throughout the streets of Tehran, with the public expressing their grief by passionately beating their chests and chanting slogans like "Death to America" and "Death to Israel." The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vowed severe retaliation against this assassination, and the Iranian regime is attempting to symbolize its sacrifice and defiance by holding this funeral during the period of American Independence Day.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, born in Mashhad and later educated at Qom religious seminaries, was a prominent figure in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and his right arm was paralyzed in an attack in 1981. He then served as the country's president from 1981 to 1989, and from 1989 to 2026, he was Iran's longest-serving Supreme Leader, overseeing the country's nuclear program and regional armed groups. Although his demise is a severe blow to the Iranian regime, with his son Mojtaba appointed as the new Supreme Leader, this occasion has become a focal point for consolidating the government's power. The entire global community is closely watching this historic funeral ceremony, as the ongoing war tensions and geopolitical influences in the Middle East directly impact the global energy market and the economic stability of countries like Sri Lanka.
