A report has emerged about the discovery of a large, secret underground room, suspected to be over twenty years old, on the premises of a prominent Buddhist college located in Gampola town. This unusual structure was accidentally uncovered during a dengue eradication shramadana (voluntary labor) campaign organized within the school premises.

The principal has officially lodged complaints regarding this matter with both the Zonal Education Office and the Gampola Police Station.

Students and the teaching staff were engaged in cleaning the school grounds, which span about two and a half acres, with the aim of controlling the current spread of dengue mosquitoes. During this effort, to properly dispose of wastewater from the school cafeteria, the group proceeded to dig a pit about one and a half to two feet deep as instructed. At that point, a cement concrete slab was found underground, and assuming it was part of an old drainage system, they drilled through the concrete layer to insert the wastewater pipe.

However, after this incident, a woman residing in a house adjacent to the school boundary came forward with a peculiar complaint. She stated that wastewater was flowing from a pipe laid down from the school grounds towards the fan in her room. It was subsequently revealed that the owners of this house, located below the elevated school grounds near Gampola Nuwara Street, had constructed a building section approximately forty feet long, extending inwards beneath the school property. The party concerned stated that they used it as their garage and storage room.

It has been revealed that this construction, built under school grounds which are state property, and then covered with about one and a half feet of soil, remained a secret for twenty to thirty years. Previously, several members of Zaharan's terrorist group, which caused significant controversy in the country, were arrested in the Gampola area, and it was revealed at the time that they held discussions in such secret locations. The teaching staff points out that even morning assemblies of the school were held very close to this bunker-like location, raising serious concerns about the safety of approximately nine hundred students and teachers. Police investigations are currently underway with the intervention of the current principal and the administration.
