A remanded prisoner assaulted a prison officer in Jaffna.

An incident has been reported where a detainee, who was remanded in the Jaffna area, assaulted a prison officer. The prison officer, who was injured in the assault, has been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

This suspect, who was remanded in connection with a drug case, was produced before the court yesterday (Monday). The court, after considering the trial, ordered the further extension of the suspect's remand period.

Following the court order, when attempts were made to take the detainee back to the prison, he assaulted the prison officer who was present there. Jaffna Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
