The Negombo Magistrate's Court has declared that a criminal offense occurred during the unrest at Negombo Prison. The case related to this tumultuous incident, which took place on July 5 and 6, was called before the Magistrate today, and the Criminal Investigation Department presented a further report detailing the progress of the investigations.

Due to that unrest, 28 deaths have been reported, and it was revealed that the cause of death for 17 of those individuals was injuries from firearms. Here, 33 deaths were reported, and accordingly, the remaining 16 occurred due to assaults and injuries.

Negombo Magistrate Ms. Shilani Perera has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to immediately identify, arrest, and produce before the court the culprits involved in this incident. The Magistrate further stated that the cause of the remaining deaths was severe assaults inflicted with deadly weapons during this period of unrest.

CID officials have informed the court that initial investigations revealed the unrest initially began targeting a group of inmates suspected of secretly providing information to prison officials about attempts to smuggle drugs into the prison. Furthermore, officials confirmed to the court that the aliases of 40 suspects involved in this incident have now been identified, and extensive investigations are underway to confirm their true identities.
