Although we live in a highly technological era today where people worldwide can connect instantly, many feel more isolated than ever before. Even though we have the ability to share information about our lives with hundreds of people online, finding true friendships has become a very rare thing in the present day.
A major reason for this is that society does not properly understand the difference between mere communication and maintaining a true bond. The foundation of a true friendship is not constant conversation or frequent meetings. Although many believe that friendship strengthens as our expectations from friends increase, this is not a successful idea in the practical world. Unnecessary expectations and constant demands for attention, affirmations, or comforting words from friends only make the bond tiresome. If only one person constantly makes sacrifices, then disappointments are inevitable.
It is normal for time spent with friends to be limited due to increased work responsibilities, family matters, and other life commitments. True friends understand this reality well. Even if there is no proper communication for months or even years, they are able to resume as before when they meet again, without any guilt or lengthy explanations. Such strong bonds are built not on expectations, but on the solid foundation of accepting their friend's nature as it is.
The current generation of youth constantly chases likes, followers, and recognition in the virtual world through social media. However, they must understand that millions of online connections can never fill the void of a few true friends. It is essential to teach children to invest time in real friends instead of popularity. Friendships that strengthen us in the face of life's challenges are never created through computer algorithms; they are built only through time, deep trust, forgiveness, and shared experiences.
In today's competitive society, where everyone tries to promote themselves, the secret to a long-lasting friendship is very simple. It is to help others without expecting anything in return and to trust friends without constantly demanding proof. It also means allowing others to enjoy their freedom while protecting one's own identity. True friendships are never coercive; they are always blessings based on maximum freedom and deep trust. No matter how much time passes, this enduring trust can be highlighted as one of the greatest gifts one can receive in life.
