The Mawanella Magistrate's Court has ordered the remand of a current member of the Aranayake Pradeshiya Sabha and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's Aranayake electorate organizer, who is accused of sexually abusing a schoolgirl by claiming to perform a ritual to ensure her educational success. According to the order issued by Mawanella Magistrate Mr. Nilantha Wimalaratne, the suspect will remain in remand custody until the upcoming 10th.

The person arrested and remanded in this manner is a forty-year-old individual named Asanga Deepal Baduwatta, a resident of the Aranayake area.

According to information revealed in court, this suspect politician had rented a house in Ruwandeniya, Kekirigoda area, along the Mawanella - Hemmathagama road, and operated a shrine (devalaya). The victimized young woman is a nineteen-year-old schoolgirl residing in Hingula, Ganethenna area, Mawanella, who is scheduled to sit for this year's G.C.E. Advanced Level examination. It was further reported in court that the suspect had taken control of this schoolgirl by claiming he could perform a ritual to remove obstacles affecting her educational pursuits.
