International Olympic Day is celebrated with great splendor every year on June 23rd, with the aim of spreading sportsmanship, a healthy lifestyle, and the Olympic spirit among the people of the world. The global theme and focus for Olympic Day in 2026 is “Let’s Move” – “You Can Do This!” (Let's move forward - You can do this!).

This special program by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aims to empower the younger generation in particular, emphasizing the importance of engaging in sports while overcoming self-doubt. Commenting on this, Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee, stated that sport is common to all of us, and the most difficult step is only the first one forward. Accordingly, this year's celebrations will be implemented through three main pillars: engaging in physical activity (Move), learning Olympic values (Learn), and discovering individual abilities (Discover).

The historical background of the declaration of International Olympic Day dates back to the Olympic Games held in Olympia, ancient Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Under the leadership of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian who worked to revive these ancient games, the International Olympic Committee was founded on June 23, 1894, at the Sorbonne in Paris. Marking this historic milestone, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Subsequently, following a proposal made in 1947, Olympic Day was celebrated for the first time in 1948, with Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Belgium initially contributing. Thereafter, all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) were encouraged by the Olympic Charter to organize related events in their respective countries.

The fundamental basis of the Olympic Movement is the promotion of the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Its aim is to involve all people worldwide in sports, regardless of age, gender, or ability. The Olympic flag, consisting of five interconnected rings in blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white background, symbolizes the unity of the five inhabited continents. This world-renowned emblem of the five Olympic rings was also designed by Mr. Pierre de Coubertin in 1913. The true essence of sport is clearly explained through fair play and the inspiring stories of athletes who have overcome obstacles.

Over 150 National Olympic Committees worldwide join in celebrating Olympic Day, which falls on June 23rd each year, with millions of people actively participating. Global celebrations on this day include Olympic Day runs and marathons, friendly sports festivals such as basketball, football, volleyball, and athletics, as well as school-level workshops, fitness programs, poster competitions, and educational seminars. Additionally, various cultural programs, exhibitions, and community-based activities are organized. These celebrations also focus on media-attracting themes such as providing equal opportunities for all, empowering the youth, and the legacy of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Anyone can contribute to the celebrations on this day by participating in a local run, engaging in a new sport, watching Olympic documentaries, or organizing fitness challenges, both individually and at a community level.

In the Sri Lankan context, the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC Sri Lanka / Team Sri Lanka) consistently contributes to this by organizing various sports events, administrative courses, and community-based activities in accordance with the guidelines and themes of the International Olympic Committee. Celebrations in the country are usually aligned with timely themes such as environmental protection, youth development, school programs, and the promotion of physical fitness. For the latest local programs and information, one can refer to the Olympic Committee's official website, olympic.lk, or their official social media accounts, @olympic_lk. Therefore, on this June 23rd, everyone worldwide is invited to cast aside self-doubt and "take the first step" towards a healthy life.
