Regarding Charith Abeysinghe, an organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) who is currently in custody accused of engaging in a bribery transaction to provide benefits to the notorious criminal 'Harak Kata' while in police custody, the former Mayor of Weligama from the same party, Mr. Rohan Jayawickrama, clarified matters by convening a special press conference. He stated that due to existing legal circumstances, the names of certain individuals would not be revealed, but this person, arrested representing the SJB, had previously been convicted by a court in Britain and later returned to this country.
The former mayor points out that when Mr. Eran Wickramaratne, a senior member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, assumed the chairmanship of the Cricket Governing Body, this suspect acted in various places to label it as an anti-party and treacherous act. Furthermore, he has continuously attacked another prominent politician in the party, Dr. Harsha de Silva, through public media. He emphasized that while immediate action should be taken if any wrongdoing has occurred, using such individuals to remove seasoned leaders within the party is a serious problem.
Mr. Rohan Jayawickrama states that due to efforts to elevate certain individuals within the party without any qualifications, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is currently facing a severe crisis. He accused that a strategy of using such characters to attack and control senior members like Harsha and Eran, who could challenge the party leadership or whom the leadership disliked, was implemented within the party.
Stating that individuals who, while in opposition, slandered the government and made strong public statements are now experiencing the consequences of their actions, he also warned that greater care should be taken when selecting individuals for internal conflicts within the party in the future. Furthermore, he added that compared to previous governments, the public has developed an appreciation for how the current government enforces the law strictly, without regard for status.
